Sarah Palin Supports Eccoterrorism

As governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin supported and encouraged the practice of gunning down of wolves from airplanes. Traversing snow covered expanses, the wolves are easy targets. They are not shot for their meat or pelts. Rather, this is "thinning" of the population, so there will be fewer wolves to hunt the caribou. This thinning is intended to raise the population of caribou for people to hunt.

This is eccoterrorism pure and simple.

Wasting More Of the Environment From the Bush Administration

The Bush administration proposes to reduce by 23% the designated habitat for the Northern Spotted Owl. This is ever more evidence of the anti-environmental mindset of the current White House. Even without further incursions into its environment, the numbers of the owl continue to dwindle.

More Ecoterrorism

The Bush Administration is proposing changes to the Endangered Species Act, such that federal agencies would no longer be required to submit to independent reviews of the environmental effects of mining, highway construction, the building of dams, etc. This guts the basic mechanism of the legislation, making it meaningless.

The departments doing the construction would be allowed to do their own assessments of their environmental effects. This is akin to allowing twelve-year-olds to set their own homework schedules and write the truancy laws.

It is amazing how craven and callow the rightist Bush Administration is. They will abdicate all responsibility to achieve a political end.

George Carlin died yesterday. He was a very funny man, and that's what he should be remembered for. But he was also someone who championed our freedom as Americans. He was arrested more than once for the things that he said. Again and again the courts came back defending our ability to say what we want.

Who Is In Charge?

I was listening to the news this morning on the radio and heard a piece on OPEC. The Saudis are concerned about oil prices. They want them high, so they can soak us, but not high enough that we might seriously consider selling the Hummer and buying a Prius. Drilling in ANWR, drilling offshore, if those options increase our domestic supply very much at all, it will only be for a limited time and we will still be reliant on the oil which overwhelmingly comes from overseas.

This means that those who are pulling the strings for us are the Saudis, Hugo Chavez, and OPEC. The best thing we can do to ensure our independence is to rely more on energy within our shores. This means harvesting the wind, the sun, and improving conservation measures. It also means moving away from an energy dependent economy. This is already happening. Partly because of gas prices, people are moving from the urban sprawl suburbs to cities, reducing or eliminating their commutes.

The Politics of Fear

What we've been reading in the papers as a "compromise" bill that gives the executive unlimited power to spy on Americans is no compromise, but a capitulation, a shameless weak kneed defeat to our civil liberties. This is the bill that grants, after the fact, immunity to the telecommunications companies for their complicity in the Bush White House breaking the law.

To those who use the fear mongering of terrorism as a rationale for this legislation I remind them of what Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Plain and simple, mountaintop removal coal mining is just that, the removal of mountains to get at the coal underneath them. When the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was passed, which sanctions this mining practice, it was assumed that mountaintop removal would be rare and provide areas of usable flatland in the economically depressed Appalachians.
    Instead, mountaintop removal has become the greatest form of ecoterrorism in the world. Over 400 mountains in Kentucky and West Virginia have been flattened. The hospitals, businesses, and communities that were supposed to have been built have not materialized, and the economic development promised for these states has not occurred.
    The rock and debris removed from the mountains is dumped into nearby valleys and streams, enlarging the area of devastation and ruining woodland and polluting streams. Over thousands of years the Appalachians have developed the ability to receive large amounts of rainfall and snowmelt. This extreme form of surface mining severely disrupts this highly developed hydrological cycle. The result is flooding that ruins communities. More than 75% of the streams in West Virginia are polluted. Surface mining is implicated in the pollution of all of these waters.
    West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the Union, and moutaintop removal exacerbates its poverty. A typical shaft mine might employ scores of miners. It only takes nine men operating huge draglines and other earth moving equipment to flatten and mine a mountain.
    The environment is damaged and people are hurting. Clearly, this is the worst form of ecoterroism threatening our country today.
